Death of the Promoter

"Death of the Promoter"

This is a touchy Subject i will start from the Top in the late 90's the Promo dude made his Phone calls night and day to get his record Popping, My 1st Promoter was ERN"MONEY" LLAMADO i can remember that day clearly. I was in School going to JSU ,but i had a 2 hour Mixshow on this station WJMI(Jackson,Ms) didnt know what a record Promoter was. Ok Skip Foward we built a relationship that still last to this day and i will never forget all the records he sent ,and even the calls to see if i was doing well. OK The SKYTEL 2Way why did they invent that thing hahahhah now here comes the 2way Rage Promoter sending his Priorities you only know his signature on his Pin ,but dont know his Voice. You can be sleep because of a long night at the club or shift, and here comes his page " dont forget to play my______Record " you fill in the blank. Skip Forward here comes the Blackberry now theres the newborn Promo guy who was just thrown in his Position never was an intern nor trained by a vet so now you are getting pages from all diffferent Id's . You can run ,but you cant hide from either of them you getting pages, emails, etc from all types of people how can i see the real from the fake?.
Answer: THE RELATIONSHIP!! the reason why alot of you guys records aren't getting played because of this issue for the 100th time we been through this at Panels at music conferences, and i know you got tired of Kevin Black saying" Without the Relationship we gonna go Backer,Backer& Backer" hahahaha. Well we are back to this issue again people at ya label are signing bullshh so you really don't want to mess up your connections because of a wack record. Its a Reccession so you walking on Pins and Needles everytime there's a Mandatory Meeting you dont know whats gonna happen. The New Guys Rely on Dj Crews which some of them can't even break a record if you gave them the format so what's the use of having them. Labels are downsizing so if you dont have your relationship you cant depend on extra money if you did loose ya gig. Every dj think since they send out an email that they can Promote so now if you are an indy promo guy you cant really eat because of this guy acting like he has sh** on lock when he's just in the way. All i can say to all my Promo Friends and Family Stand up for the Music and the Music will stand up for YOU. We created this mess because we let BullShit cats in the game without a Struggle. Now DJ's cant eat,Promo Dudes cant eat all because of this shh. One time we were a low key Secret Society Until Email Devices,Instant Messenger and Nextel Chirps. "Death of the Promoter?? You have to Revive this Situation because you allowed this to happen for too long.

We hope that good music does get played because it is good. The gadgets were not only the death of the promo guy, it also signaled the death of the relationship. Damn...

Amen. I can agree with you more. I said something simular when Bianca was doing tell um why you mad. SO I ripped the industry about peoples relationships with the record promoters and the mixers ablity to move from MIXER to AIR TALENT and the forgetful promo guy mad because you want to progress your career. Technology was the death to dj and the recording industry point plank. Everyone is a dj and everyone has a record label. Serato doesnt make you a dj. Pro tools dont make you a producer. Your bedroom at moms crib isnt your office for SUPERDOPEHYPHYLICIOUS RECORDS... Get a clue kids us old cats carried CRATES for pioneers. Sat in studios/record offices answering phones and making fliers and putting records in sleeve for mail outs. I dont even want to talk about Pro Tools or budget music programs so Ill end it there. Remember this kids when have has a record promoter said he im coming into town can i stay at your crib for the night cause we dont have money for a room? You youngster djs need to pay dues and stop capitolizing on what we built for you spoiled mommy and daddy if you buy me this I can be a supastar for $50 a night... So those promo guys that have stayed at my crib you still have my respect and I will play your records if you build with us... To me the recording game IS going BACKER AND BACKER AND BACKER.. If you dont know what we are talking about then your to young to know or were not as important as you think you are... If I stand correct J-Lo and Diddy were there.. HMMMMMM... If you build it they will come....

Well spoke Scrap and everyone else commenting on the situation. I take a different position on this though. I agree that this biz is ALL about the relationship and without that you can't do much of anything. However, the technology isn't the death of anything other than what it replaced. Like the Blackberry represents the death of the SKYTEL not the promoter.

We should use the technology to our advantage. I knew of Scrap for years but didn't officially make his acquaintance until we had an unfiltered conversation on Twitter. That convo actually allowed me to break th ice with dude and establish genuine rapport. So maybe we just got lazy record promoters in the way. The music industry as you knew is done anyway. There is a new business model but the core appeal will always be connecting with fans on an intimate level.

Elevate or get eliminated
