The city today the Chinatown Market, 2121 S. Archer Ave., due to an active rat infestation and for congested and unsanitary conditions.

On Friday inspectors from Mayor Daley's Dumpster Task Force followed up on a complaint about the market and found that conditions were unsanitary both inside and out, according to a news release from the Department of Streets and Sanitation.

More than 130 rat droppings were found over two floors including on top of potato starch containers, on shelving, under a live fish tank, and in 17 other locations. Interior conditions were found to be both cramped and unclean. Exterior conditions revealed an accumulation of junk and materials, according to the release.

Chinatown Market was issued citations for Inadequate Pest Control and for the violation of allowing that accumulation of junk and materials.
"Our inspectors said conditions were horrible and the presence of such an active rat infestation showed us that management let things get way out of control," said Josie Cruz, Deputy Commissioner of the Bureau of Rodent Control, in the release. "Before we will consider letting them reopen Chinatown Market will have to revamp their housekeeping and pest control programs, clean their establishment from top to bottom, then ask for and ultimately pass a tough follow-up re-inspection."
